7 practices to keep negative and positive thoughts in-line
Ever wondered how some people can stay so calm during chaos? It’s as if nothing really shakes them and despite dealing with the same challenges as we are, they just seem to have the most positive attitude about what’s going on.
Running a business is like being in a roller coaster. It’s a wild ride of ups and downs both financially and emotionally.
When things are on the upswing we’re on the top of the world, the money pours in and we are certain that we have what it takes.
Then comes that downhill portion of the roller coaster and we can’t seem to do anything right. Where did our midas touch go? Customers are suddenly nowhere to be seen. Hello, is anybody out there? Meanwhile the bills keep streaming in adding to the stress.
We start questioning ourselves. Do I have what it takes? Maybe this was a mistake? I should have listened to those that say 9 out of 10 businesses fails. What was I thinking?!
The internal chatter that’s going on takes over and when it does it’s easy to listen to it. As a business owner it’s so easy to tie our mood to our revenue. When it’s up, we’re up. When it’s down, we’re down.
How do we stop this emotional roller coaster and become more like the person who seems so happy and calm regardless of what’s going on?
Here are 7 practices to implement that will help you:
- You started a business for a reason. Remember your vision. When things are rough we tend to forget about this and start looking for tactics instead of getting back into alignment. Take the day off, even if you don’t feel like you can, and connect back to as to why you started a business in the first place.
- Get a bird’s eye view. When we’re stressed we’re looking at a tiny portion of a timeline. Not the natural rhythm of business, the quarter, the year but that day or week. There is no such thing as a straight line, running a business is full of twists and turns. Take a deep breath and realize that a bad week doesn’t make a year.
- Write down all your accomplishments for the last few years. During downswings we need a list to remind us how much we’ve accomplished and how far we’ve come. Perspective is a wonderful thing. Remember how awesome you truly are!
- Eliminate the word “I can’t” from your vocabulary and replace it with “I won’t” as that makes you realize you have a choice. One makes you feel as if you don’t have any control, the other makes you realize you are in control. Self-talk and the language you use makes for the results you get. Garbage in, garbage out. Change your self-talk to words that empowers you. That is a daily practice and habit you must implement. Rewire your brain to think more positive and to see more opportunities.
- When someone is rejecting your offer or what you sell, they are not rejecting you. How often do you turn an offer down? Learn to disassociate a “no thanks” with feeling personally rejected. They rejected your offer, not you!
- Read, study, learn. Your revenue is directly tied to your level of knowledge. I’m always amazed at how few business owners have ever read any books on sales, marketing and business. You’re not born successful, you become successful by learning what to do and not to do.
- Build your support team of mentors, coaches, advisors and friends. Ask for help. This is one of the most common mistakes I see among new business owners and a big reason as to why they fail at their business. They think they have to do it on their own. Thomas Edison, who invented the light bulb, wasn’t a crazy scientist locked up in a lab feverishly working on his invention by himself. He had an entire team helping him and thanks to that, he leveraged not only time, but used other people’s knowledge to help him. And therefore he succeeded.
Learn how to manage your emotions so that they are not tied to your revenue. You’re the captain of this boat. Learn how to steer it regardless of what the open seas throws at you and you’ll end up where you wanted to go rather than being tossed around in the open seas hoping you won’t sink.
